Democratic Republic of the Congo - In a bid to safeguard vulnerable farmers, the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) has launched a crucial initiative dubbed "Secure Harvest." This program aims to protect farmers from attacks by armed groups during the critical harvesting season.

Years of conflict have plagued the eastern DRC, displacing millions and disrupting agricultural production. Militias frequently target farmers, stealing their crops and livestock, and often resorting to violence. The "Secure Harvest" program deploys UN peacekeepers alongside farmers in the fields, providing a crucial layer of protection.

"We came here because of the presence of MONUSCO," stated Lokana Heritier, a farmer from Ituri province. "It's thanks to their presence that I can go to the field; otherwise, I'm afraid."

This initiative is a critical step towards improving food security and protecting livelihoods in a region ravaged by conflict. By enabling farmers to work safely, the "Secure Harvest" program contributes to the economic stability and resilience of local communities.
